However, since she was there, Pinkerton asked her for more information. Warne explained that she needed to work to support her parents. She was convinced that she was the perfect candidate for the job. Pinkerton asked her why a woman would be suitable for the position. Werne explained that women could be most useful in gaining information in many places where male detectives could not gain access. A woman would also be able to befriend the wives and girlfriends of suspected criminals and gain their confidence. Warne also stated that women have an eye for detail and are excellent observers. In 1856, a young woman visitor entered his office by the name of Kate Warne. She was 26 years old, a widow, and had no children. Pinkerton was confused because he had not posted any ads for a secretary. Warne explained to Pinkerton that she had seen a job posting for a detective and wanted to apply. Pinkerton was in disbelief. There were no women detectives at that time. A female detective was a totally foreign concept. Pinkerton was known for his organizational skills and ran a tightly controlled office. He practiced a regimented workstyle and kept meticulous daily records of each investigative case.
Having just finished the book, The Lincoln Conspiracy, written by Brad Meltzer, I have found a role model and heroine in the female detective identified in this book. The story entails the secret plot to kill President-Elect, Abraham Lincoln, and why this plot failed. Interestingly, the failure was due to the work of some very astute and courageous private detectives hired to uncover an extremely involved and vicious plot to kill the President-Elect on his way to give his inauguration speech in 1861. Included on the team was the first female private detective, Kate Warne.Īs explained in the book, Allan Pinkerton started the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in the 1850’s. It was located in Chicago, Illinois. It was the first detective agency ever formed. Pinkerton assisted law enforcement in its endeavor to solve major crimes.
